YMCA of Southwest Florida confirms that its broader youth recreation offerings include youth sports plus gymnastics, tumbling, dance and racquet programs; availability varies by branch and session.
👶 Looking for Activities for Ages 2–5?
Even preschoolers have plenty of choices.
For kids under 5, check out Elite Fine Arts Academy and Heart & Sole for dance, Horizon for gymnastics, Flow Grappling for Little Kids BJJ, Charlotte County Soccer’s youngest division, and swimming programs.
YMCA also offers preschool-focused gymnastics programming within its system, including parent-and-child Tumbling Tots for ages 2–4 and Lil Tumblers for ages 3–5, although parents should check which local branch is currently offering each class.
🧒 Ages 5–8
This is one of the easiest ages for trying different activities without necessarily choosing one sport competitively.
Good local options include soccer, Englewood junior tennis, Punta Gorda YMCA tennis, basketball, gymnastics, dance, martial arts, swimming, archery and art.
If your child isn’t sure what they like yet, consider starting with a shorter or lower-cost program before committing to a full season.
👦 Ages 9–12
This age group has the widest variety in our guide. Kids can choose from:

For kids interested in performing arts rather than sports, Elite Fine Arts Academy offers dance, musical theater, voice ensemble, acrobatics and circus arts.
For martial arts, The Wado Ryu Dojo has a kids program typically aimed at ages 6–14, while Total Martial Arts & Fitness offers youth Taekwondo in North Port.
🧑 Activities for Teens
Teens don’t have to age out of extracurricular activities.
Look at advanced or tournament tennis, competitive cheer, dance, boxing, martial arts, visual arts, voice, acting and children’s theater.
This can also be a good age to choose programs that develop a specific skill rather than simply filling the afternoon.
🟦 Don’t Overlook the YMCA
The YMCA deserves more attention than just Kids Zone.
Punta Gorda YMCA offers youth/family programming and racquet sports, while Englewood YMCA has aquatics, sports/recreation, youth development and before/after-school programming. YMCA of Southwest Florida also lists gymnastics, tumbling, dance and youth sports within its recreation programs.
Kids Zone is different from an after-school program because the parent remains onsite. Current posted hours include 4:30–7:30 PM Monday–Thursday at Franz Ross and 5–7:30 PM Monday–Thursday in Englewood, in addition to morning hours.
🏫 Need Actual After-School Care?
A one-hour soccer or dance class isn’t the same as having somewhere for your child to go every afternoon.
Apex Martial Arts Academy in Port Charlotte is particularly interesting because its program combines after-school supervision with martial arts. The program runs Monday–Friday for children 5+, and school pickup may be available depending on the school.
YMCA branches and participating sites also offer before- and after-school programming. Both the Englewood and Punta Gorda YMCA listings identify before/after-school services among their programs.

Before signing up, ask about registration fees, uniforms, equipment, costumes, recital or competition fees, sibling discounts, trial classes, cancellation policies, and transportation or school pickup.
Schedules can also change during the school year, so programs marked Contact, Varies, or By Session should be confirmed directly before you make plans.
