North Port's Hidden Treasure: Discover Warm Mineral Springs

Florida's only natural warm spring is right here in North Port

By Natalia Thompson September 21, 2026

When we think about family adventures in Southwest Florida, our minds usually go straight to beaches, playgrounds, splash pads, and nature trails. But North Port is home to something completely different—and truly special.

Tucked away at 12200 San Servando Avenue is Warm Mineral Springs Park, the only natural warm spring in Florida.

With mineral-rich water that stays around 85°F year-round, fascinating archaeological discoveries hidden beneath the surface, and a history stretching back thousands of years, Warm Mineral Springs might just be one of North Port's greatest hidden treasures.

And yes—families can experience it, too.

🌿 What Makes Warm Mineral Springs So Special?

At first glance, Warm Mineral Springs may look like a peaceful natural swimming hole surrounded by trees.

But underneath the water is an extraordinary geological formation.

The spring is more than 200 feet deep, and warm, highly mineralized water rises from deep underground. Unlike a swimming pool, the water isn't artificially heated—its warmth comes naturally from below the Earth's surface.

The City of North Port describes the water as anaerobic and highly mineralized, and the spring maintains an average temperature of about 85°F throughout the year.

More than 150,000 visitors annually come to experience the park, according to the City of North Port.

🐇 A Window Into Prehistoric Florida

Here's the part kids may find especially fascinating: Warm Mineral Springs isn't just a place to swim.

It's also one of America's important underwater archaeological sites.

Exploratory dives beginning in the 1950s uncovered ancient human remains as well as evidence of animals that once roamed prehistoric Florida.

Among the discoveries associated with the spring are remains of saber-toothed cats, giant sloths, tortoises, and even camels.

Human remains found within the spring also provided evidence of people living in this area thousands of years ago.

Because the low-oxygen environment helped preserve archaeological material, Warm Mineral Springs became an exceptionally valuable place for researchers studying Florida's distant past.

Today, the spring is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and diving is prohibited to protect the sensitive archaeological site.

So while your kids are floating in the water, they are actually swimming above a place that preserves a remarkable piece of prehistoric Florida.

💧 Why Is the Water Famous?

For generations, people have traveled to Warm Mineral Springs specifically for its mineral-rich water.

The spring has long had an international reputation as a wellness destination, with visitors coming to soak, relax, and enjoy the naturally warm water.

You may even hear people describe it as having “healing waters.”

But there's an important distinction for families to understand.

Warm Mineral Springs is not a medical facility, and its water should not be considered a cure or treatment for any disease. While thermal and mineral-water bathing—known as balneotherapy—has been studied for a variety of health and skin conditions, research performed at other mineral springs cannot automatically be applied to the water here in North Port.

What we can say for certain is that this is a naturally warm, highly mineralized spring unlike anything else in Florida.

👩‍👩‍👦 Why Can Warm Mineral Springs Be Good for Kids?

For children, the experience doesn't need to be about treating an illness to be beneficial.

Simply moving, floating, and swimming in warm water offers a form of gentle physical activity. At approximately 85°F, the spring also offers families a different experience from swimming in Florida's cooler natural springs.

Researchers have studied bathing in certain thermal mineral waters for skin conditions including atopic dermatitis, or eczema, with some studies reporting improvements in symptoms. However, those studies were conducted at other mineral springs with different water compositions.

That means parents should not expect Warm Mineral Springs to treat a child's eczema or another medical condition.

For most kids, the benefits are much simpler: movement, outdoor time, relaxation, less screen time, and an opportunity to connect with nature.

And unlike a busy water park filled with slides and attractions, Warm Mineral Springs encourages families to slow down.

Float. Swim. Talk. Look around.

Sometimes that's exactly the kind of family outing we need.

🔭 Turn Your Visit Into a Mini Science & History Lesson

Warm Mineral Springs can also be a surprisingly fun educational outing.

Before visiting, ask your kids:

  • How does water deep underground become warm?
  • What are minerals?
  • Why were ancient bones preserved here?
  • Did you know camels once lived in Florida?

Then tell them they're about to swim above a place where evidence of prehistoric animals and ancient people has actually been discovered.

Suddenly, a trip to the springs becomes a science and history lesson without feeling anything like school.

🏗️ Warm Mineral Springs Is Getting a Makeover

Families visiting now may notice that parts of the property look a little different.

In July 2026, the City of North Port officially began a major rehabilitation project designed to preserve the historic character of Warm Mineral Springs while improving the property for the future.

The project includes work on the historic Admission Building and Spa Building, stabilization of the Cyclorama, utility upgrades, flood-protection measures, and parking improvements.

Some historic facilities remain closed during this process, but the spring itself remains open to visitors.

It's an exciting chapter for a North Port landmark that has welcomed generations of visitors.

Sometimes the most interesting adventures aren't hundreds of miles away.
