For 70 years, generations of Englewood families have gathered over Labor Day weekend to celebrate the community’s history, creativity and small-town spirit. In 2026, Englewood Pioneer Days reaches a major milestone—and the community is marking the occasion with a theme worthy of the celebration: ’70s Disco.
Families can expect bell-bottoms, sparkle, funky music and plenty of colorful parade entries, along with three days of favorite Pioneer Days traditions. The weekend includes the Cardboard Boat Races, the Diaper Derby, the Pioneer Day Parade on Dearborn Street and free family activities at Pioneer Plaza.
How Pioneer Days Began
Englewood Pioneer Days began in 1956, when local newspaper editor and historian Josephine “Jo” Cortes envisioned a community celebration that would bring new energy to what was then a quiet fishing village during the slow summer season.
The first celebration was simple and unmistakably local. Early settlers gathered for a luncheon, while the festivities included a parade with fire trucks, a conch-shell band, foot races, a beard contest and the memorable shipwreck party.

As Englewood grew, Pioneer Days grew with it. Pageants, street dances, car shows, community contests and other activities became part of the celebration over the decades. The festival also helped inspire the creation of the Lemon Bay Historical Society. The organization grew out of a 1983 Pioneer Days celebration honoring Cortes and was formally incorporated in 1985 to preserve the history of the Lemon Bay area.
Pioneer Days has endured hurricanes, red tide, funding challenges and pandemic interruptions, yet the community has continued bringing it back. Seventy years later, it remains more than a parade: it is a celebration of the people, stories and traditions that shaped Englewood.

2026 Pioneer Days Family Schedule
Saturday, September 5: Cardboard Boat Races
The weekend begins at 9 a.m. at Indian Mound Park, where imaginative homemade boats will take to the water. Built primarily from cardboard, these creations are paddled, rowed or sailed by teams hoping to reach the finish line before their boats become part of the bay.
In addition to the races, families can enjoy music, festivities, pirates, prizes and food and drinks available for purchase. Bring a folding chair and plenty of community spirit.

- Location: Indian Mound Park, 210 Winson Avenue, Englewood
- Overflow parking: Orange Avenue and Green Street, approximately four blocks away
- Free shuttle: Stumpy’s Free Ride begins service from the Green Street parking lot at 8:30 a.m.
Sunday, September 6: Diaper Derby
On Sunday, Englewood’s littlest competitors take center stage at the Diaper Derby, hosted inside the Lemon Bay Woman’s Club at 1 p.m.
This cheerful crawlers-only race is designed for babies who are not yet walking. Parents and family members serve as pit crews, using toys, snacks, keys and plenty of encouragement to coax their tiny racers toward the finish line. Babies may stop, turn around or visit a neighboring lane—which is all part of the fun.

Location: Lemon Bay Woman’s Club, 51 N. Maple Street, Englewood
Monday, September 7: The 70th Pioneer Day Parade
The highlight of the weekend begins at 9 a.m. on Labor Day. With the 2026 ’70s Disco theme, families can look forward to a lively celebration filled with local groups, businesses, decorated entries, music and plenty of retro flair.
The parade begins near Obee’s parking lot, travels along West Cowles Street to McCall Road, turns onto Dearborn Street and finishes at the Veterans Memorial Pavilion. WENG Radio/Fiorini Broadcasting will provide a live broadcast.
Families participating in the parade should report to the staging area at 240 S. Indiana Avenue early enough to be ready by 9 a.m.
The Fun Continues at Pioneer Plaza
When the parade ends, stay on Dearborn Street for the after-parade celebration at Pioneer Park and Pioneer Plaza, 325 W. Dearborn Street. Activities begin at approximately 10 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m.
